Blue Lab Gowns – taking over my sewing room

I took a break today to spend time browsing the internet just for fun and ideas. I have enough to do, but needed a distraction. I have been in my sewing room for too long. I took on a very large project and now that supplies are in, I need to finish what I started. It is a job I will be getting paid for, after all. Won’t that money be nice to apply to some things I want?

I realize that some times, I need to wait until a job is finished, to be rewarded. Even so, I need to take time to play, when I feel closed in or fatigued. Even a short walk in my backyard or around the block, letting me breath in fresh air, does wonders.

I love the sound of birds coming through my open windows even if the air is humid after the rain and the temperatures begin to rise.
Sounds, smells, nature has so many healing remedies that relax our burdensome souls. God made our world so perfect, didn’t he?

First things first, is what I always remind myself, if distractions take me away too long from a job I need to get done. I am looking forward to having these last two big sewing jobs behind me. It does me good to see the job finished but knowing I have to stay at it can be a grind in itself. Stay positive and focus on one part of the project at a time, if it is too immense and you think, “what was I thinking when I took this project on?” At times, things can seem overwhelming. That is when we all must take a break or mistakes will be made. God made no mistakes but he “rested on the seventh day”.

If rest was important to God, it must be for me too. If I have a day I don’t “feel like” sewing. I give myself permission to rest. I am always glad I did. Today, my goal is to get all these sleeves sewn into 25 gowns. No t.v. time to watch a movie with my husband until I do. That is my reward.

I set a goal each day and tell myself, if I reach it I can reward myself in some way. Keep my eyes on the goal. Even though the hummingbirds are back and feeding at my feeders hung near my office windows and the orioles enjoying my grape jelly, I can spend the entire weekend if I want, in my gardens.

If I work hard and make good progress, I have much to look forward to. Even if the weekend is rainy, I will enjoy my piano or clean my house. Yes, cleaning my house is like a reward for me, I love to clean!

Yesterday I spent 10 hours and now I have over 60 hours into this gown project. It is near the end and am happy, and proud of the details and work I put in. Would I take on another job like this one?
I may or may not, but that is the nice thing about retirement, you get to choose things because you want to not because you need to.

I am ready to dive fully in to retirement now. This job was accepted months ago but I had to wait for decisions to be made on fabric. I had already made 25 white gowns for the same company but now they wanted blue ones for the staff? It was hard for me to let them down so I said yes.

Tomorrow I will sew in the remainder of the ties and then hem the sides and bottom and the job will be complete. Oh, and to sew in my label and the one that says “Made in USA” of course!

Between grandparenting, gardening and other hobbies I enjoy, I am ready to just “Rest in the Lord” these days and take on what comes my way, being led by the Spirit. I spend more time just talking with God throughout the day and praying for my family members and friends or whomever God lays on my heart. This is a more important work than anything I have ever done or want to do.

Our schedules can get too busy. “My (God’s) burden is light.” (Matthew 11:30) That verse always comes to my mind and I think….how so God? I have so much to do. Well, that is the point. Let go of some of the things I think I must do, in the first place, and rest in Him.

God does not want us to be lazy, but to prioritize the work of our hands. He must be first in all things. Do all things for his glory and then the things we want will follow.

“Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4)

I am a wife and grandmother and still doing some sewing. Writing has been a pass time I enjoy. I write to inspire, encourage and enlighten others about the times we live in. God is my refuge and my strength.
